The Useful God is the Five Element most beneficial to you. The Unfavorable God is the Five Element most harmful to you.
用神的逻辑很简单：强了就泄，弱了就补。日主太强了需要泄——什么东西能泄你？木生火，火就是木的用神。日主太弱了需要补——土生金，土就是金的用神。不是随便说"你缺火所以用神是火"，缺不代表需要。The logic of the Useful God is simple: if strong, drain it; if weak, support it. If the Day Master is too strong, it needs draining — what can drain you? Wood produces Fire, so Fire is the Useful God for Wood. If the Day Master is too weak, it needs supplementing — Earth produces Metal, so Earth is the Useful God for Metal. It is not as simple as "you lack Fire so your Useful God is Fire." Lacking does not mean needing.

This decade your Useful God might be Water; next decade a new Luck Cycle may make Wood your Useful God. Do not cling to outdated conclusions.
